Hip Replacement Treatment in Mumbai, India By Dr Kaushal Malhan
The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. The surfaces of the ball and socket are covered with smooth cartilage. If for any reason the cartilage gets damaged and the joint becomes arthritic or the surfaces of the socket and the ball become damaged and irregular then in these cases there is no choice but to change the surfaces. This involves a surgery called total hip replacement surgery or total hip arthroplasty. Sometimes in older people when the hip joint fractures and is irreparable then in those cases also a hip replacement needs to be done. Conditions like avascular necrosis of the hip, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, old tuberculosis or infection, injuries and some childhood or sometimes congenital disorders damage the hip and a hip replacement has to be done. Dr Malhan pioneered the hip resurfacing operation in western India. He contributed to a change in practice of hip surgery and has been in the forefront of minimally invasive hip replacement. He is the only surgeon who offers the anterior approach for hip replacement in suitable cases. Hip replacements can be fixed with bone cement or are uncemented titanium implants. Newer bearing surfaces like ceramic promise longer durability. Specialized implant configurations like the dual mobility or large head assembly offer better stability and allow sitting on the floor safely.
